IRRITANT OR STIMULANT LAXATIVES - ORAL
USES: Irritant or stimulant laxatives are used to treat constipation and to clear the intestine before rectal or bowel examinations.
HOW TO USE: Take each dose with a full glass of water or juice and drink plenty of fluids while taikng that medication. Chewable tablets are to be chewed thoruoghly. Tablets are to be swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
Wafers are to be chewed. Laxatives should not be used in persons experiencing stomach cramps, nuasea or vomiting.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may casue diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rectal irritation, stomach cramps or bloating. If these effects contiune or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: rectal bleeding, rapid heart rate, weakness, dizziness, fainting, sweating, skin rash, unreliveed constipation. This medication may cause the urnie to turn pink, red or brownish in color.
Do not be alarmed. It is not harmful. Prolonged, frequent or excessive use of laxatives may lead to depenedncy.
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dotcor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, swellnig (edema), any allergies (especially to tartrazine). Catsor oil is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Bulk producing laxatives are an alternative. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before using any medication while breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Because laxatives may interfere with the absorption of some medications, it is important to tell your docotr of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Avoid the use of dairy products or antacids within one hour of taking bsiacodyl tablets. Do not start or stop any medicine wihtout doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contcat your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, weakness, lack of feelnig alert, or dry gums and eyes.
NOTES: To maintain normal bowel habits, it is important to drink plenty of fludis (4 to 6 eight ounce glasses a day), raise your intake of fiber and roughage and exercise regularly.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dsoing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Different generics of that medication may have different stoarge requirements. Refer to the package labeling or ask your pharmacist for the spceific storage requirements for the brand you are using.
